If your eyes are healthy and your uncorrected vision is good, consider having a complete exam once in your 20s, twice in your 30s, and every 2 years from the ages of 40 to 65. After age 65, an eye exam should be performed every 1 to 2 years. Infants should have an exam by 12 months, young children should be screened by age 3 and have a full exam before school, and adolescents should have eye exams every 1–2 years to monitor vision changes and eye health. For all ages, if you wear contact lenses, annual exams are recommended. If you have diabetes or a family history of eye disease, more specific recommendations may be made by your doctor. Your doctor may also give you individual advice based on the findings of your eye examination.
Please bring your glasses, contact lenses, contact lens prescription (or current contact lens boxes,) a list of your current medications, insurance information (insurance cards), and a referral from your Primary Care Provider (PCP) if required by your insurance company.
Routine eye examinations may or may not be covered, depending on your individual insurance plan. If a medical diagnosis is found, many plans do include coverage, but you must refer to your insurance benefits for specific details. For more information, see Medical Insurance vs. Vision Insurance.
Most new patient examinations and all annual examinations will include dilation. Dilation will last approximately 3 to 5 hours. Most patients feel comfortable driving when they are dilated, however your eyes will be more sensitive to light and your near vision will not be clear. If you have sunglasses, bring them to your exam, otherwise we will provide disposable shades. If you do not feel comfortable driving when dilated, you should bring a driver with you.
